Find your “why”: 5 questions to discover what drives you

5 min read ·

There is one question that changes how you approach any project: what for? When the “why” is clear, obstacles weigh less and consistency almost comes by itself. When it is not, any excuse is enough to give up. These five questions help you find yours. Grab pen and paper: it is worth ten minutes.

The 5 questions

Answer in writing, without censoring yourself:

  • 1. What would you like to be living in five years if there were no obstacles?
  • 2. What dream have you put on hold, and why?
  • 3. What would you like to do with more time and more freedom to decide?
  • 4. Whom would you like to help if you could?
  • 5. If you achieved it, what would change in your life and in the lives of the people you love?

From dreams to a plan

A dream without a plan is just a wish. A dream with action changes lives. Once you have your “why”, choose one concrete goal, give it a date and split it into small actions you can do every week.

  • One main goal, not ten.
  • Measurable weekly actions.
  • A regular review to adjust.
  • Someone to support you and ask how it is going.

Desire matters

Two people with the same tools end up in different places. The difference is usually in desire, in how much each one wants to achieve what they set out to do and in what they do each week to get closer. That is why I do not promise results: they depend on you, your attitude and your “why”.

Frequently asked questions

What is the “why”?

It is the deep reason you want to achieve something. It is different from the “what”: the what is the goal; the why is what keeps you going when it gets hard.

How long does it take to find it?

It can be an afternoon or take weeks. What matters is to write it down, review it and talk it over with someone you trust.

Can it change over time?

Yes. Reviewing it from time to time is part of the process.
